Top 5 Reasons Why Cycling is a No-Brainer

A healthy lifestyle is key when attempting to avoid an untimely visit to the hospital. A large part of such a lifestyle includes regular physical activity.

Disease prevention is a top priority for many health organizations. But sometimes, it is difficult to find the time for preventative action… I’m definitely guilty of that!
One easy way I’ve combated this is by taking up cycling. At Eagle Ridge Hospital, even some of our busy doctors are able to fit this into their daily routine!
From boosting fitness to disease prevention, saving money to environmental activism, here are five reasons why you should hop on a bike.

Top 5 Reasons Why Cycling is a No-Brainer1

1) Cycling strengthens your immune system

Regular cycling stimulates the immune system. Kicking it into high gear and warding off viral diseases like the common cold and the flu. Enlist your partner to keep them healthy too!

2) Cycling is a fun way to introduce your kids to a healthy lifestyle

Did you know that 30 minutes of brisk cycling could help reduce chances of coronary heart disease, adult diabetes and obesity by almost 50%? Get your kids active at an early age to help prevent childhood obesity, and early onset Diabetes. Try signing up for a family friendly cycling ride!

This year, my daughter, son, wife and I signed up for Wheel 2 Heal, with proceeds bene fiting Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. We had a great time while also supporting our community.

3) Riding a bike is low-impact, meaning easier on your joints

Do you suffer from knee pain, shin splints, Achilles tendonitis or running injuries? Cycling can be a great substitute if you’re looking for something that is easier on the joints and presents very little risk of these sorts of injuries.

4) Cycling unleashes those “feel good” hormones

Physical activity promotes the release of endorphins and oxytocin. Finding easy, fun ways to increase physical activity, like biking, makes health easily accessible for the family.

5) Cycle your way to a healthier planet

Cycling strengthens your heart muscles and reduces your carbon footprint. For trips up to 10km, cycling within the city is actually the fastest way to travel.

So dust off that poor neglected bike in the garage, strap on your helmet and get healthy. Who knows, you might also have a great time re-connecting with your community.
